If you are searching for a digital marketing agency Penang businesses can actually work with, you are probably past the stage of wondering whether marketing matters. You want to know who does what, what it costs, and how to avoid signing a retainer that produces reports instead of enquiries.
This page answers that directly. What the work involves, how agencies price it in Malaysia, the honest comparison between a local shop and a remote team, and exactly how we run projects for clients in Penang.
What Penang businesses usually need
The island and the mainland pull in different directions, and the right marketing mix follows the business rather than the postcode.
George Town food, retail and tourism. Discovery happens on Google Maps and Instagram, often from someone standing two streets away or planning a trip from Singapore. Reviews, photos that look like the real place, and a Google Business Profile that is actually complete do more work here than anything else. A significant share of the audience reads English first, which changes how the site should be written.
Bayan Lepas and the industrial belt. Engineering suppliers, contract manufacturers and B2B services have long sales cycles and a small number of high-value buyers. Nobody buys precision machining from an Instagram reel. What matters is a site that survives procurement scrutiny, clear capability pages, and search visibility for the specific technical terms a buyer types.
Seberang Perai trades and services. Aircond, renovation, pest control, clinics, tuition. Local search and fast WhatsApp replies decide most of it. The winner is usually whoever is easiest to contact at the moment the problem appears, not whoever has the prettiest website.
Homestays and hospitality. Split between platform listings and direct bookings. The margin is in the direct channel, which means the website has to earn a booking that Agoda would otherwise take a cut of.

What an agency should actually deliver each month
The most useful filter when comparing proposals is whether the deliverables are countable. “SEO management” and “social media handling” are not deliverables. These are:
- A specific number of pages built or rewritten, each targeting one phrase, with the phrase named in advance.
- A technical fix round, with a before and after list of what was broken and what was repaired.
- A named quantity of content, whether that is articles, product photography, or short video, with the topics agreed rather than invented at the last minute.
- Ad campaign management, if ads are running, with the spend, the cost per enquiry, and what was changed and why.
- A report you can read in five minutes that answers three questions: how many enquiries came in, what each cost, and what happens next month.
If a proposal cannot be turned into that kind of list, it is not that the agency is hiding something. It usually means the scope was never defined, which is how retainers quietly become subscriptions to nothing.
How agencies price this in Malaysia
Four models cover almost everything you will be quoted.
Project fee. A fixed price for a defined piece of work, such as a website build or a photo and video shoot. Best when the scope has an end. The risk is scope creep, so the written scope matters more than the number.
Monthly retainer. A recurring fee for ongoing work like search engine optimization, content and campaign management. Best when the work genuinely never finishes. The risk is paying for months where little was delivered, which the deliverables list above is designed to prevent.
Hybrid. A project fee to build the foundation, then a smaller retainer to maintain and grow it. This is the most common shape for SME work and usually the most honest, because it separates the one-time cost from the ongoing one.
Performance-based. Payment tied to leads or sales. It sounds ideal and rarely works cleanly, because it requires both sides to agree on what counts as a lead and to trust the other’s tracking. It also pushes an agency towards short-term tactics.
What actually drives the price is scope, not location: how many pages, how competitive the terms, whether content and photography are included, and whether ad spend is managed. We do not publish fixed packages because a five-page service site and a 200-product catalogue are not the same job. If you want a sense of how these variables move a quote, our breakdown of what a website really costs in Malaysia works through the same logic for builds.

Local agency or remote team: the honest version
We should be straight with you about this, because it affects whether we are the right fit.
We do not have a Penang office. We are a Malaysian team working remotely, based out of Kuala Lumpur, and we serve clients across the country and outside it. There is no branch on Beach Street and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Agencies that list an address they do not occupy are risking their own local rankings and, more importantly, starting the relationship with a lie.
What that costs you. If your work needs someone physically present on a regular basis, we are the wrong choice. Weekly on-site video shoots, event coverage, walking into your factory to photograph a production line, or a marketing manager who sits in your Monday meeting. A local crew will serve you better and you should hire one.
What it gains you. No travel time billed into your rate. No pressure to schedule an afternoon meeting for a decision that takes six lines of email. And your choice of agency stops being limited to whoever happens to be within driving distance, which matters when your industry is specialised.
What does not change. Local search work does not require a local body. Optimising a Google Business Profile for a George Town cafe, building capability pages for a Bayan Lepas supplier, or running ads targeted to Seberang Perai postcodes is all done from a keyboard. The knowledge that matters is how the searches behave, not the view from the window.
How we work with Penang clients
Five steps, and no part of it requires you to drive anywhere.
- A call. Zoom or Google Meet, thirty to forty minutes. You describe the business and what is not working. We ask about your margins and your capacity, because there is no point generating enquiries you cannot service.
- A look at what exists. We audit the current site, the Google Business Profile, and whatever tracking is in place, then tell you the three things we would fix first. You get that whether or not you hire us.
- Scope in writing. A document listing what is delivered, in what order, by when, and what it costs. Nothing starts until you have approved it by email, and that email is the reference point for the rest of the project.
- The build. Work happens in stages with something to review at the end of each one, rather than a long silence followed by a reveal. Feedback comes back in writing so nothing gets lost in a chat thread.
- Monthly review. A short report and a call if you want one. Enquiries, cost per enquiry, what changed, what is next. Payment runs through Wise, and every account we build stays registered in your name.
That last point deserves its own sentence. Your domain, hosting, Google Business Profile, ad accounts and analytics belong to you from day one. If you leave, you leave with everything. You can read more about how we operate on the about page.

What we do, and what we do not
We do website design and rebuilds, search engine optimization including local search, product photography and video for ads, landing pages for campaigns, and logo and brand identity when the brand itself is holding things back. Past work is on the portfolio.
We do not run daily social media account management, handle influencer contracts, do on-site event coverage, or promise rankings by a fixed date. We also turn down work when the honest answer is that a business is not ready for it. Spending on ads before the site can convert is the fastest way to lose money in this industry, and we would rather say so than take the retainer.
Questions we get asked
How soon will I see results? Ads produce traffic in days and enquiries within weeks if the offer is right. Organic search takes three to six months for new pages, longer for competitive terms. Anyone promising faster is either targeting phrases nobody searches or doing something you will pay for later.
Do you work in Bahasa Malaysia and English? Both. For most Penang businesses the right answer is both, because the same customer searches in different languages depending on the moment.
Can we meet face to face? No. Everything runs over video call and email. If that is a dealbreaker, hire locally and you will be happier.
Do I have to commit to twelve months? No. Retainers run month to month once the initial scope is complete. A contract that traps you is usually protecting the agency from its own results.
What if I only need one thing fixed? That is fine and common. Plenty of projects are a single rebuild or one round of technical repair with no retainer attached.

Start with a straight answer
Send us your website address and one line about what is not working. We will look at it properly and tell you the three things we would fix first, in plain language, with no obligation to hire anyone. If the answer is that you do not need an agency yet, we will say that too.
